The Visually Impaired Program educates blind and visually impaired students ranging in age from Early Childhood through age 21 through an itinerant model within a student’s home school. All VI staff are itinerant and serve students in their home schools district-wide.

Services
  • Instruction provided to totally blind students, low vision students, and students with cortical visual impairment, as well as students with additional disability areas

  • Instruction in all areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum including compensatory or functional academic skills, including communication modes, orientation and mobility, social interaction skills, independent living skills, recreation and leisure skills, career education, use of assistive technology, sensory efficiency skills, self-determination

  • VI pull-out direct instruction and mainstream support

  • In-house Braille production

  • Paraprofessionals proficient in the Braille and Nemeth codes

  • College scholarship opportunities for VI students

  • Itinerant based services district wide for students attending their home school.

  • Campus and community-based travel instruction

  • Instruction in the use of white canes and other mobility devices

  • Distance magnification as a travel tool

  • Technology resources that support safe and effective travel
