Dual Language Immersion

The District currently offers Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs at six schools – Danz, Wilder, Baird, Jackson, Edison and Franklin. DLI is a form of bilingual education that includes both English Learners (ELs) and non ELs with the goal of becoming bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural.

In the DLI program, students learn the same rigorous content as their grade-level peers. The difference is that students are taught in both Spanish and English simultaneously in a 80:20 model. The numbers 80:20 refer to the ratio of instructional time in Spanish and English. In a 80:20 model, the amount of time that students are instructed in Spanish decreases yearly (as instruction in English increases) until students are instructed 50% of the day in Spanish and 50% in English.

Students learn alongside each other while developing high levels of language and literacy in both languages. Students also develop cross-cultural awareness that will prepare them to thrive in today’s global community. The longitudinal research on academic achievement clearly demonstrates all student groups benefit from schooling through two languages (Collier & Thomas, 2014).

Programs like DLI help prepare our students for an ever-changing global society, and provide an advantage when entering high school and post-secondary education.

The first immersion program in Green Bay was started at Danz Elementary in 2001. To accommodate students moving to Edison Middle School, the program was added at Edison in 2006. In 2012 programs were started at Jackson and Wilder, and in 2013 a program at Baird Elementary was added. In 2018, Franklin Middle School was added as a dual language site in order to accommodate west side dual language students.
