Preble Students Implement Book Buddy Program During Virtual Learning

Students with booksIn March of 2020, Preble High School FBLA members were inspired to take action to help elementary students and parents struggling with reading during the pandemic. The high school students aimed to create a program to provide reading materials to students, help them to interact safely with other students while enhancing reading skills, and ignite excitement about reading. 

The Preble students hosted a successful book drive in December 2020 and collected just under 1,000 books. Martin Elementary School students were able to select at minimum six new books to add to their personal collection. The book selections were made through a virtual catalog. 

After the book drive, Preble FBLA and Key Club students volunteered to read with Martin students one-on-one for 15 minute sessions as part of a virtual reading program. A District staff member supervised the virtual "breakout rooms." The Book Buddy Program was born in January of 2021, and will continue through the 2020-21 school year. 

The Preble student organizers sent a survey to parents of the Book Buddy Program students. Parents responded that their children were “excited on Buddy days,” and that they enjoyed reading with an older mentor. It was also reported that their children quickly became comfortable reading virtually with their Buddies, and gained confidence in their reading skills. 

Thanks to the following Preble student organizers for using their time, skills and talent to help their fellow students: Emily Brosig, Breeanna Patzke and Madisen Wucherer. Volunteers for the Book Buddy Program also included: Dane Bergstrom, Joshua Helgeson, Libbie Pelishek, Abigail Peruzzi and Eleanor Stoa.
