Students, staff and community stakeholders broke ground on the future West High School weight room and wrestling space on November 1.

The weight room and wrestling space are one of several West High School projects to come from the November 2022 Referendum.

Superintendent Dr. Claude Tiller, Jr. and West High School Principal Dexter McNabb both thanked the community for the passage of the referendum.

“This 2022 referendum has spoken,” principal Dexter McNabb said. “The kids from West High School and the community truly deserve this momentous moment. They finally have something to put their vote behind and see something taking place.”

West High School athlete and junior Donovan Beauchamp also thanked the community for supporting the future of high school athletes.

“I’d just like to thank everyone that made this possible for us, anyone that helped in any way,” Beauchamp said. “I think this can greatly improve West High School athletics. I think it can help me improve my sport and everyone else to achieve what I have achieved here.”

Athlete and senior Alisa Lee said she’s excited for the construction of the new weight room, even though she personally won’t get to experience the new facility.

"I know that I’m not the only one who’s excited,” Lee said. “Many of our students and the athletes here are so excited for this to come here so that they can use this to improve themselves and compete against other schools and districts here.”

Throughout the rest of the school year and over the summer of 2024 work will be done to the auditorium, gym, locker rooms and a new stadium will be constructed, in addition to the weight room and wrestling room.

ATS&R is the architect for the project and IEI is serving as the general contractor.
